The British Standards Institution (BSI) committee SEM/1 stands for Energy Management.
Operating under the direction of the BSI Standards Policy and Strategy Committee, SEM/1 is responsible for the development of British Standards specifically in the field of Energy Management and Energy Savings.
The SEM/1 Committee’s key roles include:
International Coordination: The BSI SEM/1 Committee "mirrors" the activities of international and European bodies, specifically ISO/TC 301 (Energy management and energy savings) CEN/CLC/JTC 1 (Energy management and energy efficiency in the framework of energy transition).
Standards Maintenance: It oversees the development and revision of standards such as the BS EN ISO 50001 series, which provides requirements for energy management systems.
UK Representation: The committee ensures that the views of UK industry, government, and other stakeholders are represented during the drafting of global energy standards.
The British Standards Institution (BSI) is the UK's National Standards Body (NSB). BSI represents UK economic and social interests across all European and international standards organizations. BSI works with many different industries, businesses, governments and consumers to develop British, European and international standards.
The Standards Development portal contains information on all of the standards under development and proposed standards with which BSI are involved. Standards are developed by dedicated panels of experts, within technical committees such as SEM/1 for Energy Management.
A standard undergoes various stages of development, beginning with the Proposal stage, which is aimed at affirming the market need for a standard. Once a proposal for a standard is approved, the relevant panel of experts in the area is tasked with drafting the standard, as per internationally agreed principles of standards development.
As soon as a draft is mature enough, it undergoes public consultation when it is made available for anyone to view and comment (Public comment stage).
Every public comment BSI receives on a draft standard is considered by the relevant panel of experts and BSI staff and the final published standard is updated as appropriate.
Following public consultation and before a draft can become a published standard, it undergoes further edits until the panel is satisfied with its quality and only when consensus has been reached.
Opportunity to support the BSI SEM/1 Committee through UKAEE volunteering
If you are interest and have specific technical knowledge or expertise in energy management or renewable energy technology, the UKAEE is always looking for UK chapter members who would be willing to support by reviewing draft documents so that the designated UKAEE chapter SEM/1 committee member can provide input to the SEM/1 technical group.
The expectation would be to work collaboratively as a small group where the designate would share drafts with volunteer/s where they can review and feedback.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email the UKAEE team on team@ukaee.org for further information.
