Welcome to the UKAEE – ESOS Lead Assessor certification guide, your support for applications, renewals and legislative queries. We are dedicated to supporting professional growth and community impact through our chapter.
Our Objectives:
To provide clear guidance to ESOS Lead Assessors past, existing or new applications.
To support additional queries or issues faced with new applications or renewals.
Support improvements to the application process and platforms.
Support ESOS queries to the Environmental Agency
An AEE certified ESOS Lead Assessor has demonstrated that they have the capability to carry out and oversee or review energy audits and overall ESOS assessment aligned with the requirements of the UK Environment Agency ESOS regulations.
ESOS certified Lead Assessors are the only individuals approved by the UK Environmental Agency to sign off ESOS audits for organisations required to comply with ESOS.
The Basics:
ESOS Lead Assessor Eligibility: The individual must hold an active AEE Certified Energy Manager International (CEMI) or Certified Energy Auditor International (CEA) qualification and be able to demonstrate all PAS 51215:2014 competencies including transport energy auditing.
Certification Maintenance - CPD: The ESOS Lead Assessor must undertake and report a minimum of 7.5–8 hours of ESOS-related CPD activities annually to UKAEE. Please note this is separate from your CEMI/CEAI certification CPD requirement, which requires a CPD summary every three years.
Renewal: ESOS certification incurs an annual renewal fee of £100. Evidence of current CPD and PII must be submitted to UKAEE each year by 31 December.
New ESOS Lead Assessor Applications: Apply via the UKAEE application form — see link below. The form includes built-in eligibility checks and guides you through the full process.
ESOS certification assessment: As part of the ESOS Lead Assessor application process you will be contacted for a short interview and an online assessment to confirm your competency.
Good to Know:
ESOS certified Lead Assessors must provide current professional indemnity (PI) insurance and agree to comply with the AEE ESOS Register Terms and Conditions.
If your CEM or CEA certification lapse you lose your ESOS certification.
Audits are undertaken to ensure that your CPD is maintained on https://aee-europe.org/ . If your CPD is not up to date or does not meet the requirements, you will be contacted to rectify this by a set timeframe. Subsequently, if your CPD remains incomplete, you will be notified of your removal from the ESOS Lead Assessor register and your ESOS certification revoked.
CEM or CEA certification is renewed in your AEE Central account. Guidance can be found here.
AEE annual membership and AEE certification are two separate entities. AEE membership is due on an annual basis, where CEM / CEA certification is due every three years.
