To become an AEE approved ESOS Lead Assessor (LA) and be listed on the AEE ESOS Lead Assessor register, you must meet a number of eligibility requirements, pay the application fee and complete an exam. Please complete the eligibility check below before proceeding with a full application.
To apply you must:
Hold an active AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEMI) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEAI) certification (international (I) version based on SI units).
Hold current Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) relevant to energy auditing work or be covered by your employer.
Be able to demonstrate PAS 51215:2014 competencies including transport energy auditing (CEMI/ CEAI training typically includes an introduction to ESOS and also transport auditing techniques, depending on where training has been carried out) and be familiar with PAS 51215:2025 BSI standard.
Commit to a minimum of approximately 1 day of ESOS-related CPD per year.
Agree to comply with the AEE Code of Ethics and ESOS Lead Assessor Code of Conduct.
Pay the application fee of £100.
Step 1 - Eligibility Form, Application Payment and Test on ESOS Understanding
Complete the application form using the button above. The form captures your eligibility, CEMI/CEAI certification details, PII confirmation, CPD commitment, Code of Conduct sign-off, sector focus, third party availability and reference details in one step. The form takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria the form will exit and provide guidance on next steps. A pass mark of 80% is required.
Step 2 - Payment
On successful completion of the application form a link to the UKAEE ESOS Lead Assessor payment page will be presented. The application fee of £100 is required before your application can progress. Once payment is confirmed UKAEE will be notified and your application will move to the next stage.
Step 3 - ESOS Assessment of PAS Competencies
On confirmation of payment and passing test you will receive an email containing information on the online Assessment of PAS Competencies and awareness of PAS 51215-1:2025 and PAS 51215-2:2025.
Step 4 - Application Review
Following successful completion of the ESOS Understanding Test and Assessment of PAS Competencies, AEE will review your application. You will be contacted within 5 working days with the outcome or to request further information.
Step 5 - Registration
On successful completion of the application review you will be published on the AEE ESOS Lead Assessor Register. You will receive a confirmation email from UKAEE.
Reapplication Policy
If your application or assessment is unsuccessful you may reapply on one further occasion. If your second application is also unsuccessful you will not be eligible to reapply for a period of two years.
Annual Registration and Renewal
Registration as a UKAEE ESOS Lead Assessor is subject to renewal every 3 years. To maintain your registration you must:
Pay £50 every 3 years to UKAEE.
Submit evidence of a minimum of 7.5–8 hours ESOS and PAS 51215-related CPD undertaken in the preceding 12 months by 31 December each year.
Maintain current PII cover at all times and provide an updated certificate or employer cover confirmation annually by 31 December each year.
Maintain an active CEMI or CEAI certification. If your certification lapses your ESOS registration will also lapse
Continue to comply with the AEE Code of Ethics and ESOS Lead Assessor Code of Conduct
Report any complaint made against you in relation to your ESOS work to UKAEE at esos@ukaee.org immediately as per the ESOS Complaints Procedure.
Failure to meet requirements may result in suspension or removal from the register.

ESOS Lead Assessor certification application fee: £100
Annual renewal fee: £100 due by 31 December each year
Please note that AEE annual membership and CEMI/CEAI certification are separate to your ESOS Lead Assessor registration fee.
