ESOS Lead Assessor Application Process

Apply to become an ESOS Lead Assessor

To become an AEE approved ESOS Lead Assessor (LA) and be listed on the AEE ESOS Lead Assessor register, you must meet a number of eligibility requirements, pay the application fee and complete an exam. Please complete the eligibility check below before proceeding with a full application.

Eligibility Requirements

To apply you must:

Be able to demonstrate a minimum of two years of good quality relevant professional energy assessment and energy audit experience relevant to the PAS 51215 capabilities. Experience must relate to energy used in a commercial setting, industrial processes or transport operations.
Hold an active AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEMI) or Certified Energy Auditor (CEAI) certification (international (I) version based on SI units).
Hold current Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) relevant to energy auditing work or be covered by your employer.
Be able to demonstrate PAS 51215:2014 competencies including transport energy auditing, and be familiar with PAS 51215-2:2025.
Provide a work history summary covering the length and type of your energy assessment experience, with practical examples against the PAS 51215 core competencies.
Provide at least one example of your energy assessment work (an energy audit report or similar), which UKAEE will cross-reference against the core competencies.
Provide at least two references for the energy assessment and audit work cited in your application.
Declare whether you have previously been on, or been removed from, another ESOS Approval Body register.
Provide identity documentation (passport or driving licence) when requested.
Commit to a minimum of approximately 1 day of ESOS-related CPD per year.
Agree to comply with the AEE Code of Ethics and ESOS Lead Assessor Code of Conduct.
Pay the application fee of £100.

The Application Process

Step 1 - Eligibility

Complete the eligibility form using the button below. The form captures your eligibility, CEMI/CEAI certification details, work history and experience summary, PII confirmation, CPD commitment, Code of Conduct sign-off, sector focus, third party availability, reference details and previous register declaration in one step. The form takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria the form will exit and provide guidance on next steps.

Step 2 - Application Payment

On successful completion of the eligibility form, a link to the UKAEE ESOS Lead Assessor payment page will be sent to you with an application code. The application fee of £100 is required before your application can progress. Once payment is confirmed, UKAEE will be notified and your application will move to the next stage.

Step 3 - Competency Assessment

Following payment, you will receive an email with access to the online Assessment of PAS 51215 Competencies.

Step 4 - ESOS Understanding Quiz

On successful completion of the competency assessment, you will be invited to complete the ESOS Understanding Quiz. A pass mark of 80% is required to progress.

Step 5 - Interview

Following successful completion of the competency assessment and quiz, UKAEE will review your application. You will be contacted within 5 working days to arrange your interview.

Step 6 - Registration

On successful completion of the application review you will be published on the AEE ESOS Lead Assessor Register. You will receive a confirmation email from UKAEE.

Reapplication Policy

If your application or assessment is unsuccessful you may reapply on one further occasion. If your second application is also unsuccessful you will not be eligible to reapply for a period of two years.

Annual Registration and Renewal

Registration as a UKAEE ESOS Lead Assessor is subject to renewal every 3 years. To maintain your registration you must:

Pay £50 annually to UKAEE, aligning with your CEMI/CEAI certification .
Submit evidence of a minimum of 7.5–8 hours ESOS and PAS 51215-related CPD undertaken in the preceding 12 months by 31 December each year.
Maintain current PII cover at all times and provide an updated certificate or employer cover confirmation annually by 31 December each year.
Maintain an active CEMI or CEAI certification. If your certification lapses your ESOS registration will also lapse
Continue to comply with the AEE Code of Ethics and ESOS Lead Assessor Code of Conduct
Report any complaint made against you in relation to your ESOS work to UKAEE at esos@ukaee.org immediately as per the ESOS Complaints Procedure.

Failure to meet requirements may result in suspension or removal from the register.

Fees

ESOS LA registration is aligned to the applicant's CEMI/CEAI certification cycle. The registration fee of £50/year is charged for the number of whole years remaining on the CEMI/CEAI at the point of application (minimum 1 year). A one-off, non-refundable application fee of £100 is charged on top. At CEMI/CEAI renewal (every 3 years), the LA pays £150 (3 x £50) to realign ESOS registration - no repeat application fee is charged.

Please note that AEE annual membership and CEMI/CEAI certification are separate to your ESOS Lead Assessor registration fee.
